My father, Ray, was born in London, England and was fortunate to survive the Blitz. He was required to leave school at 14, apprenticed as a lab. tech., and completed his military service in the RAF. He emigrated to Canada in 1957 and immediately found a job with the Ministry of Highways. Realizing that university was a possibility, he gained admission to UBC, where he completed a B. Ed. Dad spent the majority of his career teaching science, math, and chemistry at West Van Secondary, with notable stints in Bermuda and New Zealand. Dad met Mum, Muriel, also an ex-pat, through sailing friends in Vancouver. In 1975, Mum and Dad settled in the Dollarton area of North Van. They were active in the outdoors, loved the arts, were avid readers, and were keenly interested in world events. In retirement, Dad cultivated his garden, spent time on his beloved Hornby Island, and hiked in the Rockies, N.Z, and Europe. Until his 85th year, he was still a regular at the Parkgate gym. Dad was predeceased by Mum in 2000 and my brother, Guy, in 2003. He is survived by his sister, Peggy, and relatives in England. Dad is missed at home by his daughter, Claudia, and his son-in-law, Pierre. “Claudie, it’s your dad. I’m hoping that we’re having fish and chips tonight. I’d like cod.” A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 18 at 1pm at Mount Seymour United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to MSF, the Stephen Lewis Foundation, or the Salvation Army.
