Emilia was born in the small town of Battonya in Hungary the youngest of 5 children on March 30th, 1928.

When the revolution swept through Hungary in 1956, she fled along with her husband to be and hundreds of others leaving behind her beloved homeland and family, arriving in Canada where she was given $5 to start her new life.

After settling in Toronto along with her now husband Paul, they set about creating a home and friends and starting their family.  Leslie John arrived in February of 1959 followed by Rosemary Giselle in November of 1960.  Life was full of soccer, ballet, fishing trips where she would cook on a hibachi in the middle of the lake after the daily catch, trips to the cottage in Muskoka and participation in the Hungarian Community one of the highlights being the annual Helikon Ball.

In 1974, the family headed west to Calgary where there were frequent trips to Banff and the hotsprings, was always a favorite along with cross country skiing.

One of her most favorite pastimes was growing flowers and having a beautiful garden.  Her green thumb was surpassed by no one with her garden being featured on the nightly news for its beauty and lushness. A perk of living nearby a television station.

Her other passion was cooking, so no matter who came by, there would always be something on the stove to welcome you.

She was always sewing, whether it was drapes, bedspreads, pillows or tablecloths to make her home and those of her children as well as clients something out of house beautiful.

For Emilia there was never more joy than family.  Upon the arrival of her first grandchild Alexander, followed by David, Andrea and Kelsey she was overjoyed at being a Grandma and frequently babysat watching over them and seeing them grow. She took great pleasure in dressing both the boys and the girls alike in matching outfits.  She attended ballet and school recitals, soccer games and concerts of her grandchildren with great pride.

After retirement, Paul & Emilia settled in Vancouver where they enjoyed their walks along the waterfront, walking neighborhood dogs, and of course the small garden of their condo grew.  As a testament the garden is still thriving today.

When her memory started to wane in the summer of 2010, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and she entered into the care of the Capilano Care Centre.  It was with great sadness that every time family went to visit, she would slip further and further back into the recesses of her mind eventually not being able to acknowledge her loved ones.  Interestingly enough, she remained happy and was always joyful and ready to hug anyone who came to visit.  “God bless us all”, she would say while squeezing your hand.

Her journey ended peacefully in her sleep on October 18th, 2015.

Lovingly remembered by Husband Paul; Son Leslie, daughter-in-law Micheline, grandchildren David & Kelsey Meszaros; Daughter Rosemary, son-in-law Scott, grandchildren Alexander & Andrea Atkinson·
