Obituary for Jean Margaret Crabtree

Jean Margaret Crabtree

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Jean Margaret (Boal) Crabtree. Jean was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur, by her grandson Michael Cando, and her second husband Basil. Jean is survived by her brother James, her loving daughters, Audrey Cando (Joe), Valerie Boal (John Simpson), Pamela Hollington (Guy) and Cindy Boal, her grandchildren, Leila, Tanya, Alicia and Tommy, and by her extended family Michael Crabtree (Aldena), Shawn Crabtree (Irene), Elizabeth Di Savario (Albert), Lynn Pringle (John) and their children.

Jean moved to Canada from Northern Ireland in 1955 and first settled in Montreal. Both she and Arthur felt a calling to ministry and they dedicated their lives to serving through the United Church of Canada. She started her ministerial career at Toronto’s St. Andrews United Church and later worked as Chaplain for a number of hospitals in the Toronto downtown core before joining Women’s College Hospital as full-time Chaplain in 1973. While working at WCH, Jean continued her studies at Emmanuel College and was ordained in 1983. Jean and Bas traveled extensively and enjoyed their retirement at their home in Oakville and at their cottage in Port Colborne. She moved to British Columbia in 2012 and actively volunteered in knitting and sewing projects that were donated to Lions Gate Hospital NICU, the North Shore Hospice and other community programs.

We wish to thank Mum’s caregivers Robi, Jessamae and Donna for their loving support and kindness through this journey. A special thanks to her doctor Annette McCall, and her nurses, Vivien and Mary for their thoughtful care and support during her final hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a United Church Mission & Service Fund or a charity of your choice. A memorial service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church (North Vancouver) on June 26th at 3:00 PM.
